Bad luck?

It is bad luck to buy baby stuff before I'm pregnant? Two people have told me yes. My SIL won't even save any of her children's old baby clothes for me because she says it's bad luck. My friend posted baby items for sale on her Facebook and I commented how I really liked the swing, but she said she won't sell it to me since I'm not pregnant yet. This makes me mad because I feel like I'm missing out on some great deals now. So do you agree that it's bad luck?

Married the love of my life on 1-21-12. Our princess arrived on 5-28-13.

I think it's just people being superstitious. Sad

Myself, I'm more of the practical camp.  Once you're pregnant, you'll have nine months to get all that stuff and it won't take up space in your place if you wait to get it.  And there's always someone trying to get rid of baby stuff....

  • I think that's ridiculous.  There are a lot of women over on the March Mommies board who bought stuff early.  Now granted I think one of them might be a bit crazy.  she works at a baby clothing store and when the line of clothes she liked went on sale she bought an entire wardrobe.  That might be taking it a bit far.

I think if you are TTC and find a great sale on a swing or something and you have a place to store it, why not save yourself some money.  I just never thought about it before now.  I wish I had, so I could have caught the sales.

  • I don't think its bad luck. This past weekend at the fair I bought three pictures to use in the nursery, they were too cute to pass up. I found a super cute shirt at Disneyland and had it come in a onesie I would have bought that too. My mom was with me both times... my mom is a big believer that if you see something you really really like you better get it because you may not be able to find it again.

I think it sucks that people wont sell you things because they think its bad luck.

Yeah, it does suck because SIL has some really nice high quality clothes that she is donating, rather then saving for us.

  • Um I like your SIL is a little nuts.  Ok maybe she doesn't want to GIVE them to you right now, but she can save them for when you are ready to use them.  I do think that is taking a bit too far.  I also think if you see something that you have to have, you better get it, cause you never know if you will see it again. I am with Mark in the practical camp.
  • I have never heard of that. It sounds crazy to me not to buy something that is good and you like just because it means it might be bad luck. And even if something doesn't happen naturally, doesn't mean that it won't happen another way.

  • I don't think it's bad luck either. I'm more like Mark in thinking that I have time to get things while I'm pregnant. But if I see something that I absolutely adore, I will almost definitely buy it.

I'm sorry your SIL won't give/sell you any of their stuff. That sucks.

  • Thinking about it now, she probably just doesn't want to give you her stuff because she wants you to have to buy all the stuff she had to buy. :(

Sadly, I didn't think about this, but you're probably right on with this one.
